Teaching

The school is fully staffed with subject specialists. We are proud to have a staff of high academic calibre delivering current and exciting lessons for our students. All our teachers receive OFSTED training to enable them to be able to evaluate effectively and accurately their own performance in the classroom. Many of our exceptional teachers are "Lead Teachers". These colleagues provide support to teachers new to the profession and ensure that good practice is shared and celebrated across the school.

School recognises that excellent teaching is the key to individual student success. All teachers are monitored by the school's Leadership Group. Students are assessed on a termly basis to ensure that they are making progress and their levels of achievement are in line with expectation and potential.

The following comments are taken from the 2007 OFSTED  Report to assist parents' understanding of how well the school is delivering education.

"Good and improving learning is a key to the success of the school."

"Meticulous preparation for lessons, sound subject knowledge and consistent classroom management are strong features of the teaching."

"Teachers are experienced in using very good resources, such as interactive whiteboards to best effect."

"A learning ethos permeates the school with its outstanding learning environment, inspirational texts and images in classrooms and corridors. These have a palpable impact on students' engagement and enthusiasm."

"Students and a significant proportion of parents commented on the very high quality of teaching, exemplified by one parent who wrote that, 'the school is studded with high calibre teaching staff'."

Our students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. We provide additional language help for students who do not have English as a first language. There is regular homework set and a Student Planner to keep parents informed and aid students' organisation. Our curriculum is broad and balanced and meets the requirements of the National Curriculum. There is a very high ratio of computers to students, well beyond the recommended number. All students have network space. The school has a programme for Gifted and Talented students. This caters for the needs of most able students both in and beyond curriculum.

Enquiries about the curriculum should be addressed to the relevant Subject Team Leader or Mr Wilson, Deputy Head. Concerns or complaints about the curriculum should also be addressed to Mr Wilson. General enquiries or concerns should be addressed to Tutors, Year Team Leaders or the relevant Assistant Headteacher.
