Chemistry is the science of investigating matter at the atomic to the macromolecular scale. It can be divided into three main areas: physical chemistry (kinetics, thermodynamics and why reactions happen), inorganic chemistry (properties and behaviour of compounds) and organic chemistry (properties and mechanisms of the reactions of carbon compounds). All three areas are studied over the two years through both theoretical and practical work. There is a marked increase in the complexity and depth of study from Year 12 to Year 13. The course aims to allow students to develop essential knowledge and understanding in chemistry, link theoretical and practical work, to be aware of how advances in information technology can further chemistry and appreciate the contribution of chemistry to society as a whole. Chemistry requires the need for a logical and analytical approach to problem solving. It helps if students have a firm grasp of mathematical concepts, such as algebra. The reading and preparing of graphs and the ability to solve equations is also essential.
This may be a valuable course for you if you are interested in reading any of the following at University:
