Latin A-level builds on the language skills acquired at GCSE. Increased language skills enable students to read some of the greatest literature of all time in its original language. At AS Level we read Ovid's Metamorphoses, an epic poem about characters from Greek mythology. Daedalus and Icarus, the Minotaur and Ariadne all make appearances in the sections we study. We also study Cicero 'the father of oratory' who has influenced politicians from Abraham Lincoln to Barak Obama in the art of public speaking. At A2 students have the opportunity to study Virgil again, reading Book 1 of the Aeneid. Virgil's epic story of a man's quest to save his people and found Rome is a poem of adventure, perseverance, ambition and suffering. We engage with these texts in detail and learn to debate different opinions about them. Students will develop the ability to place ancient texts in their historical context while still appreciating and analysing the works as exceptional pieces of literature. These texts explore relationships, culture and issues that are at the very heart of humanity.

Reading these texts increases awareness of the history of our own society and of human relationships and behaviour. This course will prepare students to be independent learners who can utilise a range skills and work in a multi-disciplinary way. Students will have the opportunity to work in groups and pairs discussing and debating the texts we study and will also work independently building the necessary linguistic skills to tackle Unseen translation. This course will prepare students to be independent learners who can utilise a range skills and work in a multi-disciplinary way.
