Psychology
involves the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour.
Psychologists study a range of phenomena, such as perception, cognition,
emotion, personality, behaviour and interpersonal relationships.
Psychology also refers to the application of these aspects of human
behaviour to the study of mental illness. At Holland Park, we study the
many approaches to psychology over the last 100 years, including the
ideas of Freud, Skinner, Darwin and Beck. We look in detail at the
information processing approach to understanding memory. Later, we study
abnormal behaviour and attempt to understand causes for diseases such
as depression, schizophrenia and seasonal affective disorder. Throughout
the course we question methods, and statistical approaches adopted by
psychologists and attempt to evaluate and analyse research.
